A meeting I was supposed to have after work tonight was cancelled. Perfect opportunity to come home, change clothes, and run. So that’s what I did. I saw a lot more race shirts out on the trail tonight than I normally do. And got a lot more encouraging smiles and nods. It was nice.

I joined a facebook event today called “Run 26.2 for Boston”. My miles will be slow, and it will take me more than a few days or a week to rack them up, but my next 26.2 miles are for Boston… for everyone who worked so hard and was robbed of the change to finish yesterday, for those who due to injuries sustained won’t be able to run again, for those whose lives were tragically and violently taken. Tonight I finished my first 2.5 miles for them. 23.7 to go.

Wine & Dine Half: training day 2

Tonight’s (last night’s?) miles were done. 3.02 of them. I walked a lot; jogged some. Apparently (according to my runkeeper app) I hit a 10 min/mile pace around  minute 5 of my workout. I was actually running! Of course I can’t sustain that pace so it only lasted for about 2 minutes. I didn’t puke at the end of this run, and I feel it is important to mention that because for the last .75 mile I honestly felt that might happen.

About a half mile in though, my left buttock started burning really badly. Then my left hip got pissed off and started hurting. I stopped to stretch a bit and that helped a little. The burning went away but my hip still felt pretty pissy, and then the burning moved down to the side of my leg, radiating up from my ankle.

I think it might be time for new shoes. I’m going to visit the running store tomorrow and have them look at my shoes. I hope that’s all it is. I tried to foam roll my hip and it wasn’t pretty. I ended up soaking in a warm epsom salt bath instead. Now to sleep, so I’m not a zombie at work tomorrow!

DreamDash 5k

Attention any tumblrs in the Atlanta area: This race is coming up on Father’s day weekend. It is a fundraiser for the Teen Center that is one of my projects at work. I spend  A LOT of time there and working with the kids and volunteers. If you’re around and are looking for a 5k that weekend, I’d certainly appreciate you considering this one. The course is great - very fast and mostly flat - and the after party is going to be great. And, did I forget to mention CASH PRIZES for the winners? Yes, I said cash.

If you’re interested check out the link for more info, or send me an ask. And share with any friends you may have who might also be looking for some summertime races. Thanks :)

(Belated) Recap of the Tinkerbell Half Marathon (aka my first half!)

I don’t know about you, but usually the first few days that I’m back from vacation, I usually have the vacation blues. I keep thinking “Oh, yesterday I was (insert fun thing/place here)”. I’ve definitely been doing that this week. And today, if I stop and think about it, I can still feel the nerves I felt last Saturday, when in every quiet moment I thought “OMG, tomorrow I am attempting my first half marathon”. Going into it, there was a lot of doubt - not going to lie. I was undertrained. I’d lost time due to illness. And even when I was training at my “hardest”, I’d had very few runs where I actually hit my pacing requirements. Even still, I’d traveled all that way, and I was going to give it my best shot. I think the best thing that happened pre-race was me finding the medal display at the RunDisney expo booth. They had all of the medals for the 2012 races on display, so I was able to see the medal that I would earn when I finished the race. Once I saw it, I knew I HAD TO HAVE IT.  I wanted that medal, and I decided right then that I would push myself to get it.

This is really, really long, so there’s more recap and a couple more photos after the break :)

Saturday recap

Recap by the numbers:
Miles completed: 9.16
Cities ran through: 2
Roadkill passed: 1 (though I passed him twice since my course looped)
Men who called out to me from their car: 2 (what??!!)
Hills tackled: I lost count. (Michael’s revenge?)
Blisters formed: 2 :(
Times I wiped my nose on my sleeve: More than 1, less than 100. It was windy and it made my nose snotty :)

This is a pretty long recap (because I’m long-winded) so to save room on your dash:

Holy Crap, Y’all!

I just ran for 30 minutes without stopping! For the first time EVER!! That felt a-m-a-z-i-n-g. I can’t wait to do it again tomorrow. I’m wearing that stupid mis-matched outfit every time I run!

On Christmas days of old, I would meet up with this guy to do something really lazy, like sit on the couch and watch tv, or go to a movie or sit around and talk. Today, I met up with Michael for a quick run at our old high school. In the rain. And it was chilly. This track has been a nemesis for both of us. Today we conquered it. He finished a mile without stopping at a great pace - somewhere around 12 mins or so, and I did almost 3/4 without stopping. I think this should be our new Christmas tradition - this made me feel much more accomplished than sitting on my mom’s sofa chatting about things we usually just chat about on the phone :)

Riverwalk along the “Mighty Mississippi”. I will be running here on Saturday. And possibly tomorrow if i can get out if the hotel (conference) long enough. I may have to resort to the fitness room treadmill tomorrow. Wonder if this will be part of our route in March? :)
