However, I didn’t allow myself to quit! Tonight is the first of my half marathon training runs. Since I’m still a WBA (wanna-be athlete) I’m doing the Jeff Galloway method of run/walk. Tonight’s schedule called for a 30 min run and I chose 1 min intervals. About 7 mins into the run I realize/remember that there are no lights on either the trail or the parking lot where I was running, and it was quickly getting dark. By the time I’d looped back to the car (about 10 mins in) it was too dark to continue on the heavily shaded trail.
Decision time: quit and allow the epic fail, or in the words of the beloved Tim Gunn- “Make it work!”
I went into the parking lot and did loops around it until it was absolutely too dark to go on. I made it to minute 27 of 30. You probably wonder why I didn’t finish the last measly 3 mins. Well, it was seriously dark, and the last other signs of life- i.e.the only other cars in the lot- just drove away. For safety’s sake I got in my car :)
Today I got in the spirit of “learning something new everyday”. Three afternoons each week part of my job requires running an afterschool teen center that is attended by mostly middle school age students. Today, instead of staying firmly in my role as “the one in charge”, I put on my play clothes (i.e. extra gym clothes kept in my car) and played Kick the Can with the kids for over an hour. I’d never played before so it took me a minute to really understand the rules. But once I did… SO MUCH FUN! The only thing was, I didn’t have my sneakers in my car, so I played/ran in flip-flops. Still - I kicked the can once and got about 8 people out of “jail” :) Tomorrow the sneakers will be in the car so I can be a better player!
